CHRISTUS Teams Up With Special Olympics

This April, a number of CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare ministries joined forces to attract area athletes to the Special Olympics. Volunteers included healthcare workers and providers affiliated with CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital, CHRISTUS St. John Hospital, Point of Light Clinic and CHRISTUS School Based Clinics.

Texas is a state that is ranked low in the number of Special Olympics participants. To help boost participation, CHRISTUS and Special Olympics initiated a partnership and planned for a day when athletes and their parents could learn about resources, network with others, have extensive vision, hearing and dental exams and undergo healthy athlete sports physicals. Many of these athletes are under- served, under- insured and unable to afford sports physicals or have trouble finding a provider to complete such an exam.

These events were held at the University Of Houston School Of Optometry. On April 2nd, 60 sports physicals were completed. Volunteers included healthcare workers and providers affiliated with CHRISTUS St. Catherine Hospital, CHRISTUS St. John Hospital, Point of Light Clinic and CHRISTUS School Based Clinics.

This partnership and event are being recognized nationally by the Special Olympics as a best practice, with potential for expansion to other areas of the nation. CHRISTUS Foundation ministries are proud to partner with this amazing organization. We are already busy planning our next event for the spring of 2012.
