With another school year just around the corner, a number of CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare ministries are already helping students and families prepare for the return to the classroom.
As has become an annual tradition, the CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinic is hitting the streets with its Back to School Immunization Drive. Last year, the Mobile Clinic administered approximately 5,800 immunizations, including flu shots, to school-bound children and expect to see a similar number of youngsters this year.

In response to the critical need for affordable healthcare in many Greater Houston communities, CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare has introduced the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative.
Through a synergistic relationship among three vital CHRISTUS Foundation ministries, the Healthy Neighborhoods Initiative provides a continuum of care to families for whom medical care is often deemed an unaffordable luxury until illnesses have progressed and emergency care is required.

Theresa, Oliver, Miguel, and Alex—clients of the Mobile Clinic for five years, were eager to tell us how the clinic has made a difference in their lives. After visiting the clinic, Theresa and her husband, Oliver, noted its convenience and stated, “with transportation being a major issue for us and many others, the Mobile Clinic travels to where people are in need.”

In December 2008, CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinic visited San Leon, Texas to provide health screenings and immunizations to the members of the small community. This town near the Texas coastline was severely impacted by Hurricane Ike. CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinic, Verizon Wireless and First Baptist Church or Gautier, Mississippi were all stationed at San Leon Community Church to help meet the needs of local residents. The mobile unit provided health screenings, Tetanus and Flu vaccinations as well as distributed blankets to the community’s senior citizens. Verizon Wireless provided a telephone station for residents who were without electricity, and First Baptist Church provided washers, dryers, and food to recovering residents. Santa Claus was also on site giving gifts to children.

Due to the successful fundraising efforts of the CHRISTUS Foundation’s 2008 Spring Luncheon, a new Mobile Clinic was purchased to replace the existing sixteen year old unit. The new 40-foot GMC Lifeline vehicle offers preventative health screenings and influenza vaccinations to residents in Harris, Brazoria and Montgomery counties. On board the CHRISTUS Mobile Clinic are two registered nurses and one medical assistant whom is also the official driver of the Clinic on Wheels.
The blessing and dedication of the new mobile health clinic was held on July 21, 2008 and presided over by Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A. Fiorenza.
