For most grade-school students, class wasn’t in session, but important lessons were still learned this summer thanks to the professionals of CHRISTUS School Based Clinics.
Throughout June, a free summer program dubbed “Healthy Weighs” taught 4th, 5th, 6th and 7h graders at St. Pius V and Our Lady of Guadalupe the value of nutrition, health education and physical activity.
For three days a week from 9:00 a.m. to noon, the School Based Clinics- sponsored program offered fun and interactive lessons addressing nutritional needs, cooking, food labels, serving sizes, body composition and healthy habits.
Students also took part in an array of physical activities such as team sports, yoga and Tai Chi, while they related their exercise experiences to caloric requirements. The harmful effects of smoking and drugs, as well as conditions such as hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes were also addressed. All the while, students kept journals chronicling their meals and activities.
Building upon the foundation of programs such as Healthy Weighs, the professionals of CHRISTUS School Based Clinics believe that our youngsters can form health habits that will last a lifetime. We look forward to the program’s expansion into more schools in the summer of 2012.
