Frequently Asked Questions

Perhaps you were wondering …

What is CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare and what does it do?

CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, formerly St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, was founded in 1966 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston. Our organization seeks to  improve access to health care for those in Greater Houston who are often left out and left behind. Foundation ministries focus on health, education and wellness for the most vulnerable in our community through both traditional health care and special programs offered through 10 interrelated ministries in the Houston-Galveston area.

Why did the Foundation change its name from St. Joseph Hospital Foundation?

CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare traditionally had close ties to CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital. When the hospital was sold in 2006, the Foundation changed its name to better reflect the Foundation's role to continue the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, and to support the CHRISTUS Health entities which were not part of the sale of St. Joseph Hospital.

Does the Foundation still have any connection to Houston’s St. Joseph Medical Center?

No. With the sale of CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital in 2006, CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, a separately incorporated, non-profit organization, now serves only the ministries of the CHRISTUS Health / Gulf Coast region.

How is CHRISTUS Foundation different from other charitable  foundations?

Many foundations are established principally to distribute endowment funds to charitable causes. The CHRISTUS Foundation, by contrast, functions primarily as a fundraising resource for local, faith-based ministries and, secondarily, as an allocator of monies to them. In effect, the Foundation serves as a fulltime,  professional development staff for 10 Houston-Galveston health-care ministries. All aspects of the Foundation’s work pursue the singular goal of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.

What is the typical patient demographic served by Foundation ministries?

The Foundation’s ministries serve people of all ages, all faiths and all ethnic groups. However, the principal focus of our work is service to the uninsured and underserved community, who come from a wide variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.

How are CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare and its ministries funded?

CHRISTUS Foundation programs are funded by charitable donations. Since its inception in 1966, the Foundation has raised more than $100 million for facilities, programs, ministries, and social services. Learn on how to donate to CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, or call the Foundation at 713.652.3100.

Which services does CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare offer to Houston-area residents?

The Foundation has 10 ministries that offer an array of both traditional health-care programs and special programs, such as family practice, prenatal care, health and literacy education, chemical dependency counseling, and other basic social services. Our ministries are located throughout the Houston-Galveston area and provide care to those who may not otherwise receive them.

How can I become a donor to CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare?

CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare cherishes every donor, large or small, and always has pressing needs. Learn on how to donate to CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, or call the Foundation at 713.652.3100.
