CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, formerly St. Joseph Hospital Foundation, was founded in 1966 by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston. Our organization seeks to improve access to health care for those in Greater Houston who are often left out and left behind. Foundation ministries focus on health, education and wellness for the most vulnerable in our community through both traditional health care and special programs offered through 10 interrelated ministries in the Houston-Galveston area.
CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare traditionally had close ties to CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital. When the hospital was sold in 2006, the Foundation changed its name to better reflect the Foundation's role to continue the legacy of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, and to support the CHRISTUS Health entities which were not part of the sale of St. Joseph Hospital.
No. With the sale of CHRISTUS St. Joseph Hospital in 2006, CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare, a separately incorporated, non-profit organization, now serves only the ministries of the CHRISTUS Health / Gulf Coast region.
Many foundations are established principally to distribute endowment funds to charitable causes. The CHRISTUS Foundation, by contrast, functions primarily as a fundraising resource for local, faith-based ministries and, secondarily, as an allocator of monies to them. In effect, the Foundation serves as a fulltime, professional development staff for 10 Houston-Galveston health-care ministries. All aspects of the Foundation’s work pursue the singular goal of extending the healing ministry of Jesus Christ.
The Foundation’s ministries serve people of all ages, all faiths and all ethnic groups. However, the principal focus of our work is service to the uninsured and underserved community, who come from a wide variety of socio-economic and cultural backgrounds.
CHRISTUS Foundation programs are funded by charitable donations. Since its inception in 1966, the Foundation has raised more than $100 million for facilities, programs, ministries, and social services.
