School Based Clinics

Brightening Children's Futures at Seven Houston-Area Schools

Many of us remember nurses in our schools. But these days, many schools have no healthcare support. Often, because a child’s family has no insurance, he or she receives healthcare only when an injury or illness occurs. CHRISTUS Foundation is improving this picture by supporting school-based clinics in seven Houston-area schools.

Four New School-Based Clinics

CHRISTUS school-based clinic services are available in three underserved communities south of the city, in Dickinson, Baycliff and Bay Shores. Four schools newly added to the program are in the east part of the city: Resurrection, OurLady of Guadalupe, St. Peter the Apostle and St. Francis of Assisi. Each of these locations provides –

  1. Direct healthcare to students and families
  2. Leadership for the provision of health-related services
  3. Screening and referral for health conditions
  4. Leadership in promoting health and a healthy school environment
  5. Leadership in developing health policies and programs, and
  6. Liaisons among school personnel, family, community, and other healthcare providers.

Bringing Health to Life

Bay Colony (Gator-Aid) School-Based Clinic

It was 3:00 p.m. on October 30, 2007; Troy was in Kindergarten in the bilingual program. His teacher sent him to the clinic based in his elementary school that afternoon because she thought he appeared ill. After arriving in the Clinic, he sat in a chair and almost immediately slumped over. With his head turned to the side, it was apparent that his heart was racing.

K. E. Little Elementary School-Based Clinic

K. E. Little Elementary has Pre-K through 4th grade with many of the children attending K.E. Little for their entire elementary school years. The majority of families do not have access to health care. Both parents may be working, but do not have private health insurance, and may not qualify for federal assistance. The K.E. Little School-Based Clinic has allowed these families to access the healthcare they need.
