Helping Alma Live with Asthma

Just about every day, I cannot breathe, it feels as if someone is sitting on my chest and I just can’t catch my breath. That’s what it feels like to live with asthma. I’m 50 years old and have been dealing with this for as long as I can remember. It doesn’t just go away, and I don’t get used to it—it’s painful and it is scary to worry if I’m going to be able to take my next breath.

CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic is a Godsend, I am now able regularly visit a doctor that I can afford, Dr. Rosanne also helped me find affordable medication to control my asthma. This is the first time in my life that I can take a breath and not wheeze. Thank you for helping me control and live with asthma. ~ Stories such as this can be heard nearly every day at CHRISTUS St. Mary's Clinic.

CHRISTUS St. Mary's Clinic Serves as the Hub for Healthy Neighborhood Initiative

Through three vital CHRISTUS Foundation programs, the Helthy Neighborhood Initiative provides integrated care to impoverished families who often consider medical services an unaffordable luxery until an illness progresses to an emergency situation.

The hub of the Healthy Neighborhood Initiative is CHRISTUS St. Mary's Clinic. St. Mary's is a full service primary care clinic located in close proximity to many CHRISTUS School-based Clinics, as well as near routes frequented by the CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinics. Together these CHRISTUS Foundation programs build on each other's strengths for more comprehensive patient care.

  • Pay Gap Between Common Procedures
The perverse incentives in the U.S. health care system can be illustrated by the pay gap between common procedures—like cataract extraction and colonoscopy—and the relatively low reimbursement that PCPs receive for performing office visits, researchers write in JAMA Internal Medicine.
  • Many Fronts in Fighting Obesity By Jane E. Body
A close look at what and how Americans eat suggests that simply focusing on sugar will do little to quell the rising epidemic of obesity. This is a multifaceted problem with deep historical roots, and we are doing too little about many of its causes.
  • Avoiding Emergency Rooms By Jane E. Brody
Experts report that more than half the problems patients bring to emergency rooms either do not or would not require hospital-based care if an alternative source were readily available.
